User Onboarding
Notion’s in-app messages are subtle and personal
Notion stacks its update and maintenance messages in a corner, signs them "David from Notion" with a doodle, and shows Clear All only on hover.
At the time of the recording, Notion sent notices about its terms and scheduled maintenance as small in-app messages stacked in a corner of the workspace. Each one is signed "David from Notion" next to a doodled portrait, greets the user by first name and shows only the first line or two. A Clear All button appears when the user hovers over the stack.
Why it works
✅ Subtle and stacked: messages about updates and maintenance are often boring or annoying. Notion keeps them small and groups them together, so they take little space but stay visible.
✅ Personal: the doodle of David and the first-name greeting make a routine notice feel like a note from a person, which makes users more likely to read it.
✅ Hidden close button: users should always be able to close messages, and they can here. Because Clear All only appears on hover, users at least glance at the messages before dismissing them.
