Chameleon alternatives: 6 tools worth a look

Chameleon does a lot well: reviewers rate it 4.4 out of 5 and praise its ease of use above all. Reasons to look elsewhere include its learning curve, missing features and bugs, caps on live experiences, or a Startup price whose card doesn't say whether it's monthly or yearly. Here are six alternatives, each for a different need, with the facts read from their own pages.

By Yağmur Çiftçi · Published 4 Nov 2026 · How we chose

UserOnboarding Academy isn't owned by Chameleon or any tool on this list. No vendor reviewed this page before publication.

Start with what needs to change

Three picks for three different needs

  1. UserflowBest forunlimited seats and experiences on every planExperiences and team members are unlimited on every plan, where Chameleon caps live experiences at 10 on Startup and 20 on Pro, and Essentials prints its billing period: $300 / mo billed monthly, or $240 / mo billed yearly, for 1,000 MAUs.$300 / mo · Free plan: Not listed
  2. UserpilotBest forproduct analytics and session replay alongside onboardingIt pairs onboarding flows with product analytics, praised in 419 of the 1,022 reviews we read against 23 of 364 for Chameleon, and Growth adds session replay and event autocapture.$299 / mo · Free plan: Not listed
  3. AppcuesBest forin-app, email and push messages from one toolIt sends email and push from the same platform as its in-app flows and lists native iOS and Android apps on every plan; Chameleon's help center says native apps aren't supported.$3,600 / year · Free plan: Not listed

Stay with Chameleon if you want A/B tests, themes and custom CSS for tours and microsurveys in your own product, and your plan's cap on live experiences is enough. Check Chameleon's plans →

Prices as each vendor shows them, checked 19 Oct 2026–3 Nov 2026. Each tool prices in its own unit, so entry prices buy different amounts. The rows follow the list’s order: the picks, then A–Z.

Chameleon counts monthly tracked users and Userflow, UserGuiding, Appcues, Userpilot and Pendo monthly active users, but the entry plans cover different amounts (2,000 at Chameleon's Startup, UserGuiding and Userpilot; 1,000 at Userflow and Appcues' Spark), and Appcues also counts installations and published experiences. Intercom charges per Full seat, with its tours in a $99-a-month add-on that includes 500 messages, so price it by seats and messages rather than users.

Why people look for Chameleon alternatives

On G2, which lists 364 Chameleon reviews, the learning curve is the most-named complaint: 81 of the 364 reviews we read. Missing features follow (72), then friction in the builder or browser extension (70) and bugs (56). Price comes up in only 15, but the plans set limits: Startup, whose card prints $279 for 2,000 MTUs with no billing period, allows 10 live experiences, and Pro, from $750 a month, allows 20 and 10 seats.

They criticise most often the learning curve and hard-to-find settings (81), missing features (72), friction in the builder and Chrome extension (70), bugs (56) and the depth of reporting and analytics (40), while 37 name no dislike.

Before you switch from Chameleon

Chameleon's themes and custom CSS have to be rebuilt: of the tools here, only Userflow (on Studio), UserGuiding and Userpilot (both on Growth) list custom CSS. Pro is billed monthly by card, but Growth and Enterprise are billed annually, so check your renewal date before you switch.

  1. Save what you haveExport or screenshot every live flow, checklist and survey with its targeting rules, and note the events and integrations each one depends on.
  2. Rebuild one real flowRecreate your most-used flow in the new tool with the same steps and audience, then check it on the browsers, screen sizes and languages your users have.
  3. Follow the dataCheck that users are identified the same way, that the events your flows fire still arrive, and that your activation reports read the new tool's data.
  4. Price it, then switchGet a quote for your real MAUs or seats, renewal included. Turn the old flow off only once the new one has passed, then cancel the old plan.

Also considered

  • Stonly: A knowledge and support platform first, pitched to support teams; its paid plans print no prices, and none of its 132 G2 reviews is newer than December 2024.
  • WalkMe, Whatfix, Userlane and Apty: Digital adoption platforms sold by quote. Userlane and Apty are built mainly for guiding employees through business software; WalkMe sells versions for employees and for customers, and Whatfix's plans cover employee- and customer-facing apps.
  • iorad: iorad records click-throughs and turns them into step-by-step tutorials, a different job from targeting tours and microsurveys at your product's users.
  • Nickelled: Its site now redirects to Omniplex Learning, and no page we read describes the product.

How we chose

How the list is ordered. The three picks come first, each for a different need; the other 3 follow A–Z by name. A position is not a score, and no tool paid to be listed or placed.

A tool is listed only once we've read its own pricing page and its G2 reviews. Prices, plans, trials and limits come from each vendor's pages, read through a US browser session on the dates shown with each entry; when a page prints no price, the entry says so.

For reviews, an AI model read every G2 review of each tool, as far as G2's filters reach (for Pendo, 1,791 of the 1,827 it lists; for Userpilot, 1,022 of 1,023), and tagged each one against the same themes for every tool. G2 lists Intercom as Fin, its AI agent, so Intercom's rating and review count cover the whole suite; of its reviews, we tagged only the 425 that mention product tours, onboarding, checklists, banners, tooltips or outbound messages. G2's overall rating and count sit beside our counts; we don't publish review scores of our own.

All 364 reviews on G2, each read and tagged by an AI model against a fixed list of themes.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Chameleon?

It depends on why you're leaving. For unlimited seats and experiences, Userflow; for a knowledge base beside your tours, UserGuiding; for email and push from the same tool, Appcues; for product analytics, Userpilot or Pendo; for guides in native mobile apps, Pendo or Appcues; and if your support team already works in Intercom, Intercom's own tours.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Chameleon?

Chameleon's Startup card prints $279 for 2,000 MTUs but no billing period; the page's structured data lists it as monthly. UserGuiding's Starter is $249 / mo billed yearly for up to 2,000 MAUs, Userflow's Essentials $300 / mo for 1,000 MAUs (or $240 / mo billed yearly), and Pendo Free costs nothing up to 500 MAUs. Each tool counts users its own way, so compare at your own user count.

Which Chameleon alternative has a free plan?

Of the tools here, only Pendo lists one: Pendo Free, for up to 500 MAUs, with analytics, in-app guides and Pendo-branded NPS and roadmaps. The others, like Chameleon, offer free trials instead.

Which alternatives work in native mobile apps?

Appcues lists native iOS and Android, React Native, Flutter and Ionic apps on every plan; Pendo's mobile page lists SDKs for native iOS and Android, React Native, Flutter and more; and Userpilot lists native mobile support on Enterprise and as an add-on on Growth. Intercom's Product Tours FAQ says tours don't work in mobile apps, though its add-on includes mobile carousels and push. UserGuiding's FAQ and the Chameleon and Userflow help centers say native mobile apps aren't supported.

Which alternatives include A/B testing?

Chameleon lists A/B testing and goals from Pro. UserGuiding lists A/B testing with goal tracking on Growth, and Userpilot's pricing table shows a dash for it on Starter. The Appcues and Userflow pages we read don't list it.

Which alternative has unlimited seats?

Userflow includes unlimited team members on every plan. Chameleon allows 10 seats on Pro (5 more cost $300 / mo) and 15 on Growth, with unlimited seats on Enterprise; Userpilot allows 3 on Starter and 15 on Growth.

Which tool has the best analytics?

Among the reviews we read, analytics is the most-praised theme for Pendo (1,393 of 1,791), and Userpilot's is praised in 419 of 1,022. For Chameleon, 23 of 364 praise its analytics and 40 criticise the depth of its reporting.

How did you pick these tools?

Each had to have a pricing page we could read and G2 reviews we could read and tag against the same themes as every other tool. G2 lists Intercom as Fin, so for Intercom we tagged only the reviews that mention its tours, onboarding, checklists, banners, tooltips or outbound messages. The method section above explains how the reviews were read.
