User onboarding

YAZIO's signup flow is thorough and reassuring

YAZIO's long signup flow asks about goals, habits and body measurements, and explains why it needs each answer, with a progress bar at the top.

YAZIO, the calorie counting and fasting app, uses a long signup flow for user segmentation. At the time of the recording, it opens with "Start Your Journey Now" and four things the app does (track calories, track macros, time fasts, build healthy habits). The questions that follow cover your goal, how much you know about nutrition, which habits to focus on, your sex, height, activity level and goal weight. Each question has a line explaining why it's asked, a progress bar runs along the top, and illustrated screens in between explain the approach, how your data is stored and what's coming next.

Why it works

  • Segmentation users can see the point of: every question says what it's for ("Knowing your daily activity level helps us calculate your calorie needs more accurately"), so the long list feels like setting up a plan rather than filling in a form. An info link even helps with the sex question.
  • Design that keeps you oriented: emoji icons on every option, illustrations on the in-between screens and large tap targets make each step quick to read on a phone.
  • A progress bar where it's needed: a long flow needs one, and YAZIO's shows steady progress so the questions never seem endless. A privacy screen before the end adds reassurance.
