iMovie’s onboarding flow is unusual but clever

iMovie’s onboarding flow is on the old-school side of the onboarding spectrum.

iMovie’s onboarding flow is on the old-school side of the onboarding spectrum. Featuring a question mark hotspot on each part of the interface, it explains UI elements using tooltips and simple copy.

Why it’s great:

Accessible at all times - One of the best things about iMovie’s onboarding experience is that is it accessible at all times. Because the primary initiator of the onboarding process or the button that switches up the process is right in front of the users’ eyes at all times, it is way more accessible than other types of onboarding flows.

Short and concise - iMovie uses tooltips to explain each element of the UI while also keeping the copy on the tooltips very short - some are not even complete sentences.

User manual available - Some of the tooltips have a “>” at the end to signal that more information on that specific element can be found on the user manual that the app prompts when the users tap on the tooltip.
