Grammarly’s new feature onboarding is set outside of the product

Grammarly onboards users to a new feature using a 4-step product tour.

Grammarly prompts a 4-step new feature survey outside the platform and on Gmail’s UI. Instead of using a separate modal outside of its mother platform, the Grammarly extension uses the first tooltip as a new feature tour initiating modal.

Why it’s great:

Space-aware - Because the new feature tour happens outside of the main Grammarly app which is justifiable due to the common use case of the tool, Grammarly shows extra effort to make the tour quick and thus outs the tour initiator modal inside the first tooltip to save time and space.

Colored right - Knowing that most product tours blend in with the background if not designed carefully, Grammarly is aware of the fact that more often than not, users use Gmail in the light mode; and thus use a series of black tooltips to avoid blending in and risking users’ attention.

Good copy - The tooltip copy is written and formatted using value prop-like copy, so users can easily understand the new feature even by only looking at the first line of each tooltip.
