Duolingo’s empty state is encouraging

Duolingo uses an illustration of its mascot to make an error page fun.

Duolingo uses a fun empty state for when the feed section on the app isn’t available. The illustration of Duo is accompanied by a copy that reads “Check back again later. Try a lesson while you wait!”

duolingo empty state

Why it’s great:

Fun illustration - The illustration featuring Duo, Duolingo’s mascot, as sleeping is fun and makes the situation more relatable than just a 404 error.

Good copy - The copy of the empty state makes sure to direct users to trying out a lesson rather than just leaving altogether which can make a difference in a moment of user frustration.
